Have we failed skateboards history? 1/8/2025

Did we open skateboard collectors eye's?

Did we open skateboard collectors eye's?

Did we open skateboard collectors eye's?

Hi, I am Robert Furlan the owner and founder of Vintage Evolution Skateboards. And I have been looking and trying to find ways to save our great skateboards history so it will last far into the future. The researching and developing side of V.E.S. has been a long road to get the skills needed to do such detailed work and do it right. And during this time I have come to the understanding, the best way to save our history is to get skaters to care about our skateboards history. The work of inventing a process for these old boards was hard, but trying to get collectors to care seemed even harder. So for years I have tried getting help from the skateboard industry to turn this more into a hobby with the tools and techniques I have built and acquired. But have had no help or interest from anyone not even the pro-skaters whose boards we are trying to save. And as a stand alone old school skater in the world today, I feel V.E.S.  has failed.  But not failed to figure out the way to save these old boards but failed to open skateboard collectors eye's to the problems our history faces going into the future and getting them to care.

Was it just too late?

Did we open skateboard collectors eye's?

Did we open skateboard collectors eye's?

As we all know, the skateboard collectors market has been flooded by the skateboard industry making copies of their past for some time now, and with no stopping insight. They are also sold on the 2nd & 3rd hand skateboard collectors market right next to the vintage boards and they are going for more money. So if you're a kid growing up in todays world and see flipping as the future for skateboard collectors, then it is already too late to save our history and with pride. The fad skateboard market now dominates the market and the real boards of history are fading away and with no one that cares about their future. Maybe if  V.E.S. had help or possibly could have started earlier things might be different. But knowing the main ingredient  to saving our history is actually caring about the past skateboards history, and knowing so many collectors today only see them as fad, is why it is already to late.

The future of the skateboard collectors market has been changed and in a way that it will never recover. The false fad market now dictates its future and it's that unstable ground that dooms our vintage boards to oblivion. We did feel we could make this a hobby and in a way that would give back to the skaters that have always been and help the industry take back there pride, but we are sad to say we have had no taker's. That's probably because they think it can't happen or no one care's anymore. But here we are V.E.S. caring and doing the hard work and proving it can happen. But nothing from the world.

So we gave it our best shot to help others and if you were lucky enough to get our help, then you get what is possible when so many others cant. And we will keep working on our collection and finding new ways to save these boards of history for the future collectors to come that care.

And to those collectors that hold greed in there hearts instead of pride, know this, your skateboards history is dying in front of you and without them lasting so is our history for other collectors.

I AM THE NEW VINTAGE SKATEBOARD-PRO REFURBISHER

I started working mostly on old vintage boards that have no good future other than to just fade away from the collectors market. I took it upon myself to find a way to save the skateboards that are passed up by the well to do collectors of the world. The boards that if traded, get treated with no respect and only get worse with every new hand that touches it. I feel that these boards if refurbished right have a great future and value unlike all the millions of copies made today with no history at all. And I wanted to prove that a refurbished vintage looking skateboard could be skated once again, unlike most other skateboard refurbishers product. And not just skated again, but still looking good when you get done riding it. You can ride a copy without guilt or you can ride the real deal vintage skateboard with pride.

The goals of V.E.S.  are not intended for flipping vintage boards for fad or profit, but is more intended for saving them as a part of the skateboard history that all skaters share. The reality of these old boards and condition is something all skateboard collectors should know and be aware of and we are a resource of ways to preserve them so that more will be available far into the future, and in good condition.

We also see that no one has stepped up to help preserve our skateboards history in a way that helps all of us with the boards we love. Museums can only do so much and they are not saving them, they only display them as they age. The rich have most of the good one's  under one roof that most of us cant see or touch. And the Smithsonian Institution only cares for so few and you must be someone important for them to care at all. And non of them are interested in saving them for anyone else. V.E.S. cares and we are the only one that has figured out multiple ways to deal with multiple problems to save and preserve our boards for the better no matter the brand, it's history or who owns it.

Our R&D side of V.E.S has a proven public record researching and developing ways to preserve vintage skateboards in any shape far into the future. We feel our past skateboards history is also our future skateboards history and it should be saved so the future skateboard collectors of the world will have real skateboards history, not jus a copy of it. Fast made skateboard copies of the past are not the same as the real deal, just ask any serious skateboard collector and investor which one they would rather have...............

The board that started V.E.S.

About Me, Rob Furlan

I've been skating the streets, loading docks and launch ramps in the Northeast from Boston, Springfield to the Cape since the early 80's and worked at Salty-Roos-Surf in Hyannis building boards.  I'm passionate about skateboarding and my goal is to save the history that comes with a board, while restoring it so it can have collectable value for another 40+ years or handed down to family.

As my own collection grew, grabbing any beat up board I once had from my past, I realized how easily the graphics and boards  have deteriorated since my youth , so I started working on ways to save them.  I've been perfecting my technique of restoring boards over the last 15+ years as well as improving on problems inherent to 80's boards.  This is my way of innovating and preserving our history.

My first skateboard shop I worked at in Hyannis, Mass

Mid 80's Shop

This shop was affiliated with the Mass Bay Company in Hyannis back in the day. I would build the boards for skaters and hold the history, I am now saving.

This graphic is vintage and is on a vintage POWELL PERALTA Bonite Per Welinder. Un-known artist.

This is my answer to What & Why V.E.S.

I hope this answers some things: It's a long read, sorry.

I started Vintage Evolution Skateboards as a way to improve the condition of all used vintage skateboards that are in very bad shape, and at the same time elevate the value of all vintage boards and parts around the world, starting with my own collection of beat-up cheap entry level boards that most beginners of skateboard collecting can afford to buy. The volume of these boards in the world is huge. I also wanted to learn how to work backwards with some of the worst problems a board can have, addressing and learning how to work on all kinds of conditions a vintage board and its graphics might be in and how they relate to each other. I didn't want to just cover the board with new graphics, I wanted to restore the wood under the graphics first. I wanted to make the patina and aged colors of the board look good and last. What I learned is this: if you don't fix the board first and right, the graphics will just fall off sooner or later.

So I took a chance and started my own website with  information that gets to the problems vintage boards have and in a way that doesn't hide them, and it's for free to look at for everyone, everywhere. I also wanted to do things my way and not follow the status quo of most refurbisher's making vintage boards look new. Someone had to find a way to save vintage skateboards with history for the future. The big company's don't seem to care about you and your old looking board. V.E.S. does and we don't care what brand it is. Also, I couldn't find anyone talking about the tools needed to do such detailed refurbishing, so I invented the tools and the process to make things happen. No one talks about how long their refurbished board will last and if it can be skated now and in the future with no graphic problems. I think my website will show that. And the problem of refurbished boards looking new and being sold with no disclosure that work was done? I think we do the best with that because we don't make new looking boards or new graphics - SORRY - V.E.S. boards show history that can't be copied and every board done by V.E.S. comes with a certificate of work done. Plus, what is the value of a vintage copy? I think the high value of a board like this shouldn't be equal to an authentic vintage board in any shape. As of this point in my professional refurbishing career, it's my belief that boards refurbished right will last a long time and boards fixed quick will only hurt the market now and going into the future for collectors.

We started working on boards made from the Time period : 1980 to 1995 when we first started but have moved on to todays boards as well. We also believe every single board we work on is different and every problem it might have is different. We have learned how to address and reverse the damage and get it back to as close to stock as possible while keeping its history intact for the future. Our research is also helping the majority of us that can't afford new looking vintage boards but see the value in what we have and want to contribute boards back to future collectors of the world and not just let the boards fade away. We are doing the hard work of innovating and saving skateboards history that others are scared to do or can't. The other big difference between us and other  refurbishers, is that we see the beauty in a boards history and have found a way to make it custom, look good, last and have value far into the future, even for that person that wants their board and history saved for future generations to come in the family. We look at boards all over the world, and in any shape, condition, brand or year. Just look at any of my project boards and you will see we have no fear at all, no matter the condition the boards are in. We take a board you can't skate or touch and turn it into something that will last and have value, now and down the road for anyone. I ask you, the collectors of the world this, what vintage boards are going to be left around the world in fair condition in 10, 20, 30, 40 years from now that the average collector can afford or get? And will all the vintage boards left to buy in the future be a copy? That's a horrible thought! The answer to that is the board with problems in your hands, and do you care if it's handed down to future generations of skateboard collectors in the world? We do, and we are the only skateboard R&D resource shop saving our history in this way. If you don't believe me, do some research and google it.

Now many have tried to do sorta what V.E.S. is doing with vintage skateboards to some success but no one has done it to make a vintage boards with history last like this. We don't just cover a board with new graphics, we save the graphics and the history that comes with a board. We also don't fix the  boards wood condition fast for those new graphics. We take are time because you can't save one without the other. I have seen a lot of people talking about their skateboard history, but holding it or riding it is way better in my opinion, especially if you know it will last. These thrashed old boards aren't getting any better and we have found a way to save them!

I am just an old school street skater that wants to save our history, and I have gotten very good at it, so this is my way of giving back to the sport I love. Please have a look at what I have been able to do for my boards and others. I have also relied on word of mouth to spread my way of refurbishing vintage skateboards around the world. Most people didn't even know this kind of refurbishing existed and are shocked! They all say they wish they knew about this before they sold their boards.

I am Robert Furlan the new VINTAGE SKATEBOARD - PRO REFURBISHER

Owner and founder of V.E.S.

Thank you for your time and I hope you like what you see under my project pages

 and on my website.
