1970's Sims Quicksilver

Restoration Project

Before pics

Bottom

Bottom

Bottom

This board was sent to me to have a clean restoration done. The board is in great shape for it's age but my customer wants it tastefully restored to display better.

The grip tape will be replace and the bolts restored.

Board Views

Right side

From the side, this board looks great, no big chunks out of the metal or wood.

Left side

For an old board I see no separation anywhere around this skateboard.

Close up of wood middle layer.

The center wood of the board will be brought back to the original color of black.

Top Nose

Top Nose

The nose has some history.

Top tail

Top tail

The tail also has some history but when tastefully restored it will display well for a long time.

Gullwing trucks & Sims wheels

I was told by the owner this truck hanger was a replacement for a broken one.

.

Vintage Gullwing mark?

The bushings will be replaced with vintage ones to match and the all old parts are saved for future use if desired.

Vintage Gullwing mark?

Vintage Gullwing mark?

I have seen a few of these truck in passing but never saw one with this Gullwing stamp. If anyone knows what this significance is, please let me know! Thank you!

The truck risers will also be cleaned to match the final look of this board.

Steve Ibbertson Pro Freestyle Champion

I have also asked an acquaintance of mine, Steve Ibbertson, to see what he can find on the Gullwing truck mark. This is his era of knowledge- the 70's- mine is more 80's.  Anything he finds out for me and my customer is greatly appreciated!!!

Sim's Wheels

Inside wheel

Surface of wheel

Outside wheel

Most of the vintage graphic is still intact on all wheels. The vintage bearings spin like they're back in the 70's

Some of the wheels do have some chipping on the edges and some do have slight coning from use. These problems will be tastefully blended or erased for the final look.

The surface of the wheels have marks that will be taken away when restored to reveal the original color. The goal is not to make them shiny or new looking but to have a nice satin sheen that blends well with the over all appearance of the board when done.

Disassembled Board

Very slight nose twist

Slight tail twist

Sometimes when you pull a board apart you might see something different . Not sure what the blue is yet. Any ideas?

Very hard to see looking at it straight -but the pennys don't lie.

As with all the boards I work on, I look them over to figure out what their history is so I can have a better finished product for my customer.

Concave measurement

Taken off the 70kg mark to show what's left over the years.

Evaluation

This board is now dissembled and each piece is being evaluated for future restoration.

Mark update!!!

I've heard back from Steve Ibbertson on this mark. He said he has asked a few skaters from that time and they all agree this is some kind of prototype. I thank everyone for their help.

Grip-tape

Grip-tape removed

Replacement grip-tape

Grip-tape removed

Lots of vintage glue left on board after the

grip-tape was pulled.

What I found

Replacement grip-tape

Grip-tape removed

This is what you will find if you ever work on an old board like this. If taken off carefully it can be refurbished.

Replacement grip-tape

New grip-tape cut and ready to go on board..

Sides black again

Sides black again

The sides have been prepped and colored for the final build.

New grip-tape

Sides black again

New grip-tape

I had many choices of grip-tape but went with Mini-Logo because it had a flatter black background and not as sparkly as other grip-tape so it would match the original look better.

Refurbished parts

Front Truck

As this truck may be a one of a kind because of its Gullwing stamp, extra, extra caution was taken not to go too far on its refurbishing but enough to have its look blend well and display great long into the future.

Back Truck

This truck has had its gold look blended into the scratches. The goal here was to save its history but find a way to make it display much better. New vintage bushings have been added to both trucks.

Detailed Risers

These pads had scratches and dull spots on the edges. After being detailed, most of the marks are hard to see and the edges have a unified gloss appearance that will blend well with this board when built. These were polished for the shine, not covered in any oily chemical that won't last, may yellow, or could be transferred to the board or trucks.

Refurbished Wheels

These wheels have been refurbished for a look that will blend well with the final build of this board. No oily chemical used, only polished by hand and a non-yellowing product applied to protect the wheels from yellowing or darkening after the new look is exposed to the environment.

I have talked to the board's owner and we have decided to have the wheels individually shrink-wrapped. This will hide some imperfections and give them a clean over all look. It will also protect the wheels and look going into the future. As we all know, the wheels will be the first thing to go and change the appearance of this board so V.E.S. has found a way to keep your board's wheels looking good long into the future with a value that will last .

Shrink-wrapped wheels

Each wheel has been individually custom shrink-wrapped after they were refurbished. And as you can see most of the imperfections are hidden for a great look that will last.

It will also be easy to clean for years to come!!!

I use the bearing to hold the wrap in and all you have to do is pull the bearings out if you want it off to skate. As far as I can tell we are the only company thats invented and figured out how to preserve new and used wheels this way for the general public, so if you see this somewhere else they probably copied V.E.S.

- LET THEM TRY -

08/22/2022

WOW, these wheels glow almost like new !!

When the board is built my customer should like how it displays .

Board built and ready for last detail

New grip-tape applied and truck bolts colored to match.

The graphics have been filled and the bottom detailed just enough to look good and save its history for the future.

The wood center has been stained and the aluminum edge tastefully cleaned to blend well with the final look.

Almost looks like new !!!

The whole board was worked around this Gullwing Logo as it is the most valuable part of this refurbishment .

The wheels and risers blend together for a

great look !!!

This truck had the most history of use. My goal was to save its history, but to find a way for it to blend well with the final look of this board.

The gold is brighter and the grind marks have been softened and blended.

This board will get one more go over before being sent back to its owner. This was the first board of the 70's era V.E.S. has worked on but we still applied our goal of making the look and history of this board age well into the future and it was a pleasure.

I'm sure it won't be the last.

I just wish I could go for a ride on it LOL !!!

In owners hands

Text exchange.

V.E.S.  has now proven itself to take care of boards from the 70s .
