If you see an old board you like but think that its value has past . Think again!!!

WOW!! A lot of history here but some needs to go. This board is worth saving for the future.

Skateboard received April 18th

The board is now in hand!!!

I just got the board and boy does it feel solid for its age !!!!  This board is being refurbished here to show you how a board in beat up old condition and part's just bought off Ebay can be turned into a one of a kind skateboard with its history and vintage look intact while giving it another 40+ years of life. We are also adding value to this vintage board for the future collectors of this board.

You can skate a copy without guilt or you can skate a vintage classic with pride!!

I'm looking forward to working on this board. It's in great shape and will skate or display awesome when done!

The bottom graphics are holding on strong but it does have some history on top.

Here at V.E.S. I like to work with different shades of light, not only to see problems better, but to match up the vintage paint so it displays well for a long time.

The edging on this board will be an easy fix- just not sure if it should stay wood or back to black paint. What do you think?

Over drill !!

Old paper sticker

Straight board

As you can see this board was already customized before I got it. The extra holes will be fixed and sealed back up in this restoration. And just think how many shoes this old ruff grip-tape chewed up - And maybe some skin! This is the kind of stuff back in the day that made a skater tough!!!

Straight board

Old paper sticker

Straight board

Not too much flexing or warping for this board over the years so it should display well on a wall or go straight down the road like new when built. I've just bought some vintage Gullwing Pro 3 trucks from ebay to go on this build. Pics of trucks and parts to come soon.

Over the years, I have gotten pretty good at taking stickers off boards and being able to save them. But these paper ones are hard so let's see what happens.

Hidden Gems

Sticker glue

Hidden graphic

Hidden graphic

All glue left on from old stickers will be removed during restoration.

If left on, it will will only deteriorate the graphic over time and hide the true beauty of this board. The paint on this board is still holding strong so there shouldn't  be too much graphic pull when the stickers, glue, and spray paint are taken off. But as all sticker pullers know, crossing your finger's only works sometimes.

Let's see if we can't shed some light on this vintage graphic. You never know what's left until you look.

Ebay buy Gullwing trucks

Front

Front

I picked these trucks up on Ebay last week from a seller that sells a lot of vintage skateboard stuff. These trucks were bought on May 26, 2022. Cost me $94.00 with shipping.

The trucks are in great shape- not much grinding. Not sure the direction yet with these,  but when done they will match the board well!!

Now the search goes on for wheels, any ideas on what would look good? Let me know.

Vintage used red Kryptonic Pro 3 wheels: all 4 are in about the same shape. They came off another vintage Ebay buy complete skateboard package I just got on June 1, 2022. When refurbished for this project they should be perfect.

A little rust never hurts anything- unless you get to it too late.

Once again, I use a black lights to match up colors between the board and its parts. Hope to start on this soon but it's getting busy around here!!

Before

As you can tell this board has been layered with history over the years..

After

Before

Before

This is what the board looks like after I pulled off some layers of its history. You will see every detail on this build!! This is the first step. And yes some of the paint and graphics came off during this but as I control the refurbishing process from start to finish - I can address these problems along the way. Sometimes you have to take some away to have a better end result.

Part's For The Build

These are the parts that will be used to build this skateboard. I also was able to save all the stickers  even the old paper one!!!

V.E.S. refurbished wheels and bearings

Front

Front

Front

The wheels have been refurbished with a satin gloss. The vintage bearings cleaned up nice to match the wheels well.

Side

Front

Front

These wheels were not cleaned up on a lathe, to look better. Each one was done by hand to get them to look good and match this skateboard build well with some save history.

Back

Front

No more loose bearings

These wheels did clean up nice, but they do have some imperfections. Such as the inner hard plastic is worn and has some cracking.

No more loose bearings

No more loose bearings

No more loose bearings

When wheels get old and used some get bearing flop to the point the bearings just fall out of the wheel. And what was left holding them apart, was not much even if you use a bearing spacer. And if the bearings get over tightened to clean up the wheel slop, they might just break their housing and hurting the value of these wheels.

Front

No more loose bearings

Raised bearings

I used on these wheels, a custom sized washer, front and back to grip and bite the bearing location better than just the bearing alone. Between the washers is a wheel spacer locked in place. This gives the bearing a great backing, and it puts more reliable spin back into the wheel, used or not.

Raised bearings

No more loose bearings

Raised bearings

If used for display, the bearing are raised out just a little, it doesn't look so sunk into the wheel anymore, it looks more even. And if the wheels are used to go down the road for a real classic ride, they are ready.

Skateboard info so far:

4/10/2022: From what I can tell, this board looks to be made between 1984 to 1986. This was bought on Ebay by V.E.S on April 10, 2022 at 10:14 am. Cost was $212.50 + $25.00 shipping. It's being shipped to me from the Spring, Texas area.

Update: Amy from Toxic Skateboards gave me the info on this model:

She says it's "most likely our 10.5"x31" fish. Atlantic Skates in Maryland made the board in 1985. The wood was by Rob Dykema. Atlantic Skates made all Kryptonic's decks from 1981-1988. The graphic was drawn by Will Wiscott for Atlantic Skates in 1981. Will is still our main artist [for Toxic Skateboards]."

Do you know the history of this board?

This board clearly has some history... is it yours? Do you know where it has been? Let me know!
