1989 Powell Peralta Tony Hawk

MCMLXXXIX

This board is being serviced by V.E.S.  The start date is April 4, 2022 and the estimated time of completion is 2 to 3 months.  As work is being done, new pics will be added to show update to board and timeline for work.

Video from owner

Pictures of board before work

Before Top

Before Bottom

Before Bottom

The top graphic is in great shape but there are some minor stress cracks and the black paint has some history. If left in this condition it won't age well or look good down the road. Here at V.E.S. we refurbish you board to age well in use, look and value $$$$

Before Bottom

Before Bottom

Before Bottom

The bottom graphics are holding on strong but there is some history of use and the Specter of a sticker from the past.

We will rebuild the shape and repaint to match.

Bottom graphics

The bottom of the nose

The bottom of the nose

The graphic paint is still holding strong with no dry cracks and just a few scrapes. We will match the colors and fill in the blanks to bring the look of this board as close to new as possible on this project.

Sticker damage

Sticker damage

Here we have truck pad and sticker glue cleaning damage. This will also be addressed  by filling in the blanks like a puzzle. The only problem I see here is that the graphics under the sticker are brighter than the surrounding grey graphics.

Top problems

Slight razor tail

Sticker damage

As you can see, the top has some history that will be addressed as part of the owners  request.

Looks like some curb damage here but not bad. This will be fixed like it never happened.

V.E.S. Refurbish Started April 8th

Top glue cleanup

Top glue cleanup

Top glue cleanup

These are tiny glue chunks all over the board. They will be taken off the board using no chemicals.

Hard to see glue

Top glue cleanup

Top glue cleanup

This area of the board had some cleaning at one point that led to losing some of its graphics. Some glue residue is still there even after it was cleaned by someone. Sometime's board collectors and flippers use every chemical under the sun to clean glue and marks up but this common practice if done wrong is speeding up the- graphics demise- and depending on what is used it get's absorbed into the graphics and they can get soft ( as seen here )  rubbed away..

Now prepped to fix imperfections

Razor cuts

Start of first layer stress cracking

Start of first layer stress cracking

Most of these razor cut marks go deep into the board and cut across the wood grain. You could just throw some black grip-tape on to cover it up but this collector want's it done right.

These stress cracks will be fixed and the off shaped truck bolt holes will also be fixed  to improve the final look of the skateboard when hung up for display.

Side chipping and rash

The sides will be cleaned up and smooth when done. If left unfixed they would stand out when displayed.

My process will fill this when done and will last for years even on small scrapes like this.

Boards imperfections fixed April 17th

Tail chip fixed

The chip was cleaned up and filled in, which stopped the cracking in and down the top of the board. Also from this angle you can see the thickness of the ply's and the razor tail fix.

Over time if this was not fixed, the board would have problems and it would just stand out if displayed. Each of the boards blems are dealt with a case by case basis From start to finish to insure the best fix will be applied.

Top view

The top is flush and even down to the sides. The V.E.S. process for fixing chips, nick, rubs, razor tail and other skateboard imperfections will last for a -long long time- as it is part of the boards structure not just stuck on! With this done to your board you can skate your board with no fear of easy chipping or ply wood separation.

Razor tail fixed

Razor tail fixed

The razor tail is now fixed to the same thickness , edging and shape to match the board. It is now ready for the final touches before it gets painted to match. Then the board will be sealed  with the V.E.S. Satin sheen finish. It will have the same finish that's on my 2019 Powell Sword & Skull board done in projects.

No fear of over shine here!!

Bottom view

Just like an auto body shop, the rust and dents need to be fixed before painting the vehicle. It also matters that you trust them to do the right work. You can trust V.E.S to go above and beyond the work that is needed for your skateboard. And yes I did take some black paint off but just wait and see what happens next before you look away!!

The nose and sides have been fixed along with re-shaping the truck bolt holes that were off shape from being used. The few minor stress cracks were also fixed. When done, this board will not only look awesome displayed but you can skate down the road. IF YOU DARE!!!

The Painting has started May 25th

After

I have now started painting the board's colors back in starting with the black first along the edges. Next will be the top (pics coming soon), then  the bottom touched up. After that, the green, red, yellow, white and grey will be added before covered with the V.E.S. satin sheen clear coat. Any blemishes left will disappear with the V.E.S. seal.

When the board has been touched up all the way, it will be gone over and over for any little imperfections left to be fixed before the V.E.S. seal. More pics coming soon !!

95% Done on top

The top is 95% done with refubishment. When I get done with the bottom of the board and it's graphics, the board will be ready for the final prep before being sealed to a satin finish over the whole deck.

Graphics outside

Graphics outside

Graphics outside

On this project I added just enough matching paint so it didn't rise higher than the graphic. Just like the board -I worked my way backwards to fill in the blanks. The goal here isn't to make this look perfect- the goal is to bring it back to as close to the stock look and function as I can. As far as I know, a perfect board hasn't been made yet. Or is this going to be it !!

Tail outside

Graphics outside

Tail outside

Finished tail - no more chips or damage. It's almost ready for displaying or riding. And if this board is ever skated in the future the V.E.S. tail fix will hold up better and longer than the traditional Bondo , fiberglass, glue fix that I  see people doing and this board will feel natural under your feet when you pop an old trick!!!

Inside light

Inside light

Tail outside

Once the V.E.S. satin sheen seal is applied to the board any un-even color shades will be blended together and it will hide even more tiny imperfections still left on the board. Also by prepping the board better it  allows me to use less of my V.E.S. satin seal witch will leave more of the screen printed edge for that stock look and value $$$.

Intact

Leveling paint next to a small graphic can be tricky. No problem here. Black touch up paint on the bottom starts this week. Today is June 6, 2022

Prepped and ready: June 15th

Colors Blended, not covered

The boards graphics and history has now been blended to match the boards imperfections and is now getting the V.E.S. satin seal. The graphics on this board had many blemishes from  -Powell stock condition- to what happened to it after. Again the goal here is not to make it look -BRAND NEW- but to bring back some life to the board and its graphics so it can be displayed  long into the future. More pic's to come when the V.E.S. satin seal has dried.

Finished: July 1, 2022

Finished Top

Covered Top graphic

If you look closely, you will still see some stock board imperfections and a little of its history after. All the ugly stuff has been fixed, blended and V.E.S sealed!!

Covered Top graphic

Covered Top graphic

The top coat was sealed thinner to allow for the graphic edge to be seen, not just covered. This look will age well and keeps it as close to stock as possible for that future $$$.

Finished Bottom

Covered Top graphic

Finished Bottom

As you look closely, you will still see the scratches and some of the graphic's imperfections. We got as close as we could to matching the colors on this project and finding a way to match it all - THE GOOD, BAD & UGLY - and try to keep it as stock as possible for a one of a kind look that will last. This board can also be buffed to be shinny in appearance if wanted. Could more be done to this board? Of course, but this is what the owner wanted.

Fun Build

Ready For Home !!

This board had its challenges- they all do. I also did this in a 3 month time frame- step by step- in front of my customer and you, addressing and solving each problem as it showed up. You can collect a copy and smile or you can save the real deal and feel proud to own it. It will be sent back to its owner soon and I will post his comments here!!
