Customer's Vintage Powell Sword & Skull

History being saved soon!

This customer wants his original complete vintage skateboard back under his feet to ride again with all its original parts refurbished and most of its history aged look intact. As in most cases with these old boards they are a work in progress. Any problems that pop up will be shared with the owner during the refurbish and a fix will be applied. This old school skateboarder isn't afraid to trust me with his board!

Don't miss this build!!!

This board is being refurbished with all its original parts. The griptape is also being refurbished and put back on. My time line for this is around six months from start date.

The goal here is to to get it ready to ride for my customer - as a vintage board, of course -  and save its history at the same time. As you can see, this board is just crumbling apart. Let's see what we can do!!!

Stay tuned.

The customer asked to save

No problem

The owner also wants to save this history that comes with the board. These are the kind of boards I like to work on the most- the ones with personal history. And, I get to make it last !!!

This too will be blended in with the final look of this board!

As you can see, this board is being held together with the tail guard. The good news is that it has good shape.

My guess is that the other side of the board took some weather related damage at some point for awhile.

This is a big growing problem for this board and customer. No problem for V.E.S. !!!

Look even closer

This separation goes right to the truck and the middle of the board. With this amount of damage to the board's wood, as soon as you take the trucks off, the 7 ply separation starts spreading even faster to the other side.

Tail damage

Look even closer

What do you see?

The damaged plys can slide around when the board is rotting. Thanks to the tail guard, trucks, nose guard and rails most of the board stayed in shape.

What do you see?

What do you see?

The board still has some nice concave to it after all these years. The truck guard stickers will also be saved as part of the board's history.

Wheels/bearings

What do you see?

Wheels/bearings

Wheels and bearings could look better- let's see if I can bring some color and life back to blend in well with this board's total refurbish.

Trucks

What do you see?

Wheels/bearings

The trucks will be dealt with along with all the board's rusty hardware.

The board and paint are the same thing

Deep cracks on both sides

Deep cracks on both sides

When you have the board's wood in this condition, your graphics can't hold on much longer if it's holding on at all.

These pennies don't only show how deep the dry rot cracks go, but it also shows the raising and separating of the boards 7 plys. If left in this condition, one day you will see through the skateboard.

V.E.S. is changing this board's future for the better!!

At this point of the board's paint and graphic damage - every time you go to touch or grab or even if it's just sitting in the corner of your house- the paint is still falling apart!

V.E.S. is going to stop the aging process of this board and turn back the clock of time!!

The Good the Bad and the Ugly

Some may say.

But not V.E.S.

Just kidding!!

Now in pieces

Many years later

Now the board is ready to be restored.

!!! And it needs it !!!

First round of restoration

The board and its graphics are now stable and can be worked on without the worry of it disintegrating. The plastics have been cleaned up and prepped for the next phase. The stickers have been refurbished and are ready to be put back on. The bearings have been cleaned and are ready to spin into the future. The hardware is ready for the next step . When we work on boards in this bad of shape we take our time on every piece of the board to maintain its history ,look and value.

Griptape removed

Ready for refurbish

Paint under griptape

Ready for refurbish

The griptape has been removed from the board and is now ready to be refurbished with its history saved.

Now what?

Paint under griptape

Ready for refurbish

What you see is what V.E.S. deals with all the time on old boards. Now what?

As always I will consult with my customer on how to proceed for the final look of this board.

This is what V.E.S. offers.

Custom - Saved - Skateboard - History

Paint under griptape

Paint under griptape

Paint under griptape

Take a look. The paint underneath the griptape is now even cracking off the board.

As I have said before, most boards at this stage of age and condition will not last into the future and its value will be in constant decline.

The V.E.S. process is changing that future with every board we get !!!

Update: November 7, 2022

Problems reversed

Pieces put back in

Pieces put back in

Before any work was done on this board I had to stabilize the graphics, so I could work on the board. Now that the board and its graphics have been stabilized I can now start to customize the board and its look before being V.E.S. sealed.

Pieces put back in

Pieces put back in

Pieces put back in

The big splinter that fell off this board is now back into its stock position and this corner of the board is now made stronger to last into the future. No termites getting into this board now or any time soon!

Sides sealed right

Pieces put back in

Sides sealed right

This boards 7 ply's were wide open, dry and in constant deterioration. The center of both sides were bubbling out and splitting apart.    But that's no problem for V.E.S.

Work done so far under a black light

Reversed condition

Look closer

I do pics under a black light to gives you a great point of view as to how the paint looks before and after work is done. It's for my customer and  for those unconvinced that the graphic or the look of the paint will not change.

Look closer

Reversed condition

Look closer

The paint still looks old and shows its history. The only change is that it's locked in back to the board not flaking off into the air.

Keeping the O.G. look, but better.

Reversed condition

Reversed condition

Reversed condition

The V.E.S. process not only fixes the wood under the paint, it repairs the paint at the same time closing the dry-crack gaps and reversing the damage of time, then locking it in for a better looking board ready to go forward into the future.

WOW !!

Wheel well saved

Reversed condition

You can now rub, hold, touch, display, pass around to friends your skateboard history and not be scared to loose it. The next time you are around someone or someplace with a lot of skateboard history on the wall, ask them if you can pass the boards around to your friends.

My guess is that you can't. V.E.S. gives you the opportunity to take back your skateboard history that so few control.

This customer is !!!

The side fixed

Here you can see the V.E.S. custom fix for this boards side. You can guess at what I use but it's really about how I use it and in what way and time.

Wheel well saved

Notice the shape is back and the paint is sealed. This area was the worst on this vintage skateboard, but now the worst looks good.

Just go back a few pics and compare.

Refurbished Trucks

Now Ready For The Final Build

These trucks have been powder-coated to match the original white. All the original hardware was cleaned up and sealed to match the overall final look. The POOL TOOL stickers have been refurbished and put back on as part of this builds history saved. The bearing have been refurbished and are ready for its wheels. 11/18/22

Wheels cleaned

Cleaned: in outside light

Before sides

These wheels were in ok shape as most of the history was from sitting in storage.

Before sides

Cleaned: in outside light

Not too much damage from the bearings, but like any wheel of this age, the bearings, if rusty and left in, will only lead to more damage as time goes on.

Cleaned: in outside light

This is the first step of the V.E.S. detail. I can do more but my customer likes how this looks, so I will stop.

Now that the wheels are done, I will apply a custom product to help maintain the look and help protect the wheels from the elements.

The look and shade of this wheel will blend nicely into the final look of this board when reassembled.

Now you can see the color of the wheels. This is just one part of the board, but all together this look will age well long into the future and look good doing it while adding value $$$.

As a company that is in the business of saving skateboard history to see the same company

( Powell Peralta)  copying it's history makes me wonder why they haven't called me yet.

And only Vintage Evolution Skateboards

is doing it.

The board is almost done

The V.E.S. Seal

This board is almost done, it just needs to look perfect when it leaves my shop, I just can't have it any other way. You can now touch the graphics and paint without them falling or flaking off. This board also has had no graphic or paint touch up, just the boards condition reversed and its history sealed.
